About Spice Islands Industries Ltd Spice Islands Apparels, established on December 28, 1988, transitioned to a public limited company on October 6, 1994. Founded by Umesh Katre, who previously worked with Mafatlal Apparels, the company specializes in manufacturing and selling knitted and woven garments. It began exporting readymade garments in 1989 to markets such as the UK, Japan, and European Community countries. The company expanded its production capabilities with a plant in Bhandup, which boasts an installed capacity of 600 tonnes for knitted fabrics.
In 1996, Spice Islands Apparels gained recognition as a Small Scale Industry (SSI) and an export house by the Government of India, enhancing its marketing opportunities in Europe. The company also increased its stake in its subsidiary, Bhupco Alloys Ltd, from 51% to 99.93% during 1996-97, and diversified its offerings to include T-shirts. This strategic growth highlights its robust presence in the garment industry, catering to both domestic and international markets.
