About Southern Magnesium & Chemicals Ltd Southern Magnesium & Chemicals (SMCL), incorporated in 1985, is a company primarily engaged in the production of magnesium products. Initially, SMCL focused on manufacturing magnesium metal through a joint venture with the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Development Corporation, using the Pidgeon process. The company successfully enhanced its production capacity from 200 to 600 tons per annum by 1990.
In 1993, SMCL diversified into producing magnesium granules, powder, alloy, and extrusions. It expanded operations internationally by setting up a plant in Bahrain in 1994-95. Despite these expansions, unfavorable market conditions led SMCL to cease magnesium metal production. Currently, SMCL specializes in manufacturing magnesium chips, turnings, granules, and powders. The company also operates a carbon dioxide plant and a pilot facility for magnesium carbonate production, utilizing locally available resources at its Andhra Pradesh site.
