About SML Mahindra Ltd SML Isuzu Ltd, originally incorporated as Swaraj Vehicles Limited in 1983, is a prominent Indian automotive manufacturer specializing in commercial vehicles. The company was initially a joint venture between Punjab Tractors Ltd (PTL) in India and Mazda Motor Corporation & Sumitomo Corporation in Japan. Over the years, it has evolved by incorporating advanced Japanese technology and expanding its product range, including goods vehicles with capacities from 3.0 to 6.0 tons and passenger vehicles with seating capacities from 12 to 41. SML Isuzu is known for producing India's first factory-finished buses and pioneering 4-wheel drive LCVs and CNG mini-buses.
The company faced financial challenges in the 1990s but underwent successful rehabilitation. Key stakeholders include Sumitomo Corporation, which increased its stake to 53.5% in 2009 before reducing it to 43.96% in 2012, with Isuzu Motors acquiring a 15% stake. SML Isuzu has a strong dealer network and continues to innovate with new models, including luxury buses and the Xm-Series Trucks & Buses. Its facilities are located in Nawanshahar, Punjab, supporting its growth and capacity expansion initiatives.
