About Sandur Manganese & Iron Ores Ltd Sandur Manganese and Iron Ores Limited (SMIOL) was established in 1954 and operates in the mining sector, focusing on manganese and iron ores in Bellary District. The company also ventures into manufacturing ferroalloys and coke, and has diversified into electronics and software development. SMIOL has a history of expansion, including setting up a metal and ferro-alloy plant in 1968 and developing captive power projects. Despite financial challenges, declared sick by BIFR in 1999-2000, and restructuring efforts, including selling assets and mergers, SMIOL has continued to expand its operations. In 2020, the company commissioned new coke oven plants and a furnace, and merged with its subsidiary, Star Metallics and Power Private Limited. Recent projects include a 0.4 MTPA Coke Oven Plant and a 30 MW Waste Heat Recovery Boiler, enhancing its iron and steel production capabilities.
