National Stock Exchange of India Limited (NSE) was incorporated on November 27, 1992 as a public limited company and commenced operations on March 2, 1993. Established as India’s first demutualized electronic exchange, NSE pioneered a modern, fully automated screen-based trading system that enabled investors across the country to trade efficiently.
Over time, NSE expanded beyond equities by introducing multiple market segments and products, including the cash market, futures and options, mutual fund platform, commodity derivatives, exchange-traded currency derivatives, wholesale debt market, and interest rate futures. It was also the first Indian exchange to launch exchange-traded currency derivatives on August 29, 2008, following the RBI-SEBI committee framework. Additional milestones include the launch of the Mutual Fund Service System (FY2009), currency options (2010), and a debt segment (FY13).
NSE built key subsidiaries to support market infrastructure and services: NSE Clearing Limited (August 1995) for clearing and settlement, NSE Indices Ltd (May 1998) for index services, and NSE Data and Analytics Limited (June 2000) for real-time market data, benchmark data, fixed income valuations, and analytics used by institutional investors, regulators, and asset managers. NSE International Exchange (NSEIX), set up in November 2016, enables trading in foreign currency-denominated products with ~21-hour trading access.
NSE continues to broaden its offerings, including electronic gold receipts and expanded commodity derivatives (e.g., 10-gram gold futures, Brent crude, electricity, and natural gas futures), including derivatives on Platts benchmarks. In FY2026, it enabled equity capital mobilisation of over Rs 4.78 trillion and total fund mobilisation of Rs 20.33 trillion. NSE has filed a Draft Red Herring Prospectus with SEBI and plans an IPO via an offer for sale of 148,905,525 equity shares (Re 1 each).
