Nahar Industrial Enterprises Ltd (NIEL), originally established as Oswal Fats and Oils in 1983, began with the production of fatty acids and expanded into oxygen production and solvent extraction by 1987. The company went public in 1993 to finance the establishment of new manufacturing units for paper and vanaspati ghee, although only the ghee plant was operationalized. Over the years, NIEL diversified into textiles, installing spinning and weaving units, and expanded its power generation capacities with plants in Punjab.
Significant corporate restructuring occurred with the amalgamation of Nahar Fabrics, Nahar International Ltd, and Nahar Sugar & Allied Industries Ltd, consolidating assets and liabilities into NIEL by 2005. The company further expanded its textile manufacturing capacity by installing additional weaving looms and dyeing facilities. Formerly owning Nahar Retail Ltd (previously Cotton County Retail Ltd), NIEL continued to evolve through strategic expansions and integrations, focusing on textiles and energy.
