McLeod Russel India Limited (MRIL), part of the B M Khaitan group, is the world's largest tea plantation company, producing over 70 million kilos annually from its 53 estates in Assam and West Bengal. Originally incorporated as Eveready Company India Private Limited in 1998, MRIL has evolved through strategic acquisitions, including Borelli Tea Holdings and various renowned tea companies, reinforcing its dominance. As a leading Indian tea exporter, it maintains strong connections in the UK and Europe, marketing its products under the Elephant trademark. The company is certified by several international quality and ethical standards, such as FLO and ETP.
MRIL has also ventured into biofuel production through the cultivation of Jatropha in North East India. The company expanded internationally by acquiring Phu Ben Tea Company in Vietnam and other holdings in Uganda, USA, and Rwanda. Despite selling stakes in Rwandan companies in 2018-19, MRIL continues its strategy of growth and modernization, investing in infrastructure and equipment to enhance production capabilities.
