Gujarat Themis Biosyn Limited, established in 1981, is a pharmaceutical company initially promoted by Kantilal Shah in collaboration with Gujarat Industrial Investment Corporation Ltd and Chemosyn (P) Ltd. The company began production in 1985 and underwent a significant takeover in 1991 by Yuhan Group, South Korea, and Pharmaceutical Business Group (India) Ltd., which includes major players like Themis Medicare Ltd. and Cadila Health Care Ltd. Currently, Themis Medicare Ltd. manages the company. Initially producing erythromycin, GTBL expanded into manufacturing bulk drugs such as rifampicin and cephalexin but faced challenges related to product purity and yield, leading to financial difficulties and restructuring.
By 1995-96, GTBL increased its paid-up share capital and expanded its production capacity, particularly for rifampicin, while launching a new pharmaceutical division focusing on anti-tuberculosis and antibiotic products. The company continues to explore diversification and capacity expansion to enhance production efficiency and turnover.
