About Energy Development Company Ltd Energy Development Company Limited (EDCL), established on January 19, 1995, is a public limited company specializing in power generation and infrastructure development. Initially formed to execute the Harangi Mini Hydro Electric Power project on a 40-year BOT basis, the company has expanded its operations to include the construction and maintenance of hydro projects, bridges, and the supply of materials. EDCL signed a Power Purchase Agreement with Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd in 1999, and the Harangi project was commissioned the same year.
Over the years, EDCL has diversified its portfolio by acquiring full ownership of Ayyappa Hydro Power Limited and other subsidiaries, establishing wind and hydroelectric projects across Karnataka, Kerala, Arunachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. By 2010-11, EDCL had increased its hydroelectric capacity significantly, owning projects with a combined capacity of over 429 MW. Through strategic acquisitions and expansions, EDCL has become a key player in renewable energy and infrastructure sectors in India.
