About Coal India Ltd Coal India Ltd (CIL), a 'Maharatna' Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Coal, is the world's largest coal producer. CIL's history dates back to 1973, evolving from Coal Mines Authority Ltd to a key player in the global coal market. It was awarded 'Navratna' status in 2008 and 'Maharatna' status in 2011, reflecting its operational efficiency and financial strength. The company is actively expanding its infrastructure, commissioning several First Mile Connectivity projects and rail lines to enhance coal evacuation.
